Burger or Hamburger is savored as the most desired fast food meal in the United States. A hamburger is basically a sandwich prepared by stuffing ground meat patty, generally beef, between two slices of a bun cut in half. Hamburger is also famous for its seasoning. Most popular condiments used in hamburgers in the United States are mustard, mayonnaise, and ketchup. Besides ground meat patty, hamburgers are also stuffed with lettuce, onions, tomato slices, pickles, and cheese.
Hamburgers are also categorized into two types in the United States. Fast food hamburger and individual hamburgers served at restaurants are two basic types of burgers served in the United States. The individual hamburgers served at restaurants are prepared using everything including lettuce, onion, tomato, and sliced pickles as well as melted cheese on the patty or crumbled on top. American restaurants also serve veggie burgers for those who don't relish meat. Cheeseburgers are also hot favorite in the United States.
McDonalds is the most popular fast food burger restaurant serving different types of burgers in the United States. On the other hand, there are several restaurants such as Burger King are famous for serving the best hamburgers in the United States. Food was great, and the service was simply wonderful. We came in with a group of 35, and they were very willing to do separate checks. We had car trouble and had no problem with us using the lot to take care of things. Visit this place!

Good eats! Don't pass this place up. Irish Nachos are delicious. Try the Green River milk shake too.

Such a great little diner! Great food and wonderful staff. Will definitely stop here again.

YUM! I have never been here before and it was fabulous! So much better than Steak and Shake ! Great staff great food and nice atmosphere... I would definitely come back again if in the area!

While it is very cute inside and I enjoyed the 50s/60s music playing, the food is just so-so. This is a review for breakfast, because they don't turn their fryers on until 11:45 or noon on Sunday. I wanted a burger and fried green beans but had to settle for breakfast. I ordered a 3-stack of pecan pancakes and a side of corned beef hash. Beware the pancakes are quite large - about 8 in diameter and 3 was too much for me. The pancakes was rather lacking in flavor, but were fluffy. The hash was crispy and decent. They were doing a brisk business, but I could overhear that a few other tables were disappointed that lunch was not being served yet at 11:30. My husband was underwhelmed by his omelette and hash browns as well. Kinda boring, he said. So we would give this a SKIP if passing through again.

When you're looking for some food and exiting at Michigan City, skip the Steak & Shake and drive the extra mile or so down the road for this place. Burgers are great, and are cooked in that pressed flat, crispy-edged diner style that you see at some places. Shakes are very good, too. Order the Irish nachos to split with someone and you won't be disappointed!

Yummm.. My family and I have been going to Schoop's throughout Northwest Indiana for years.. This was my first visit in a few years since we moved away. I had a rootbeer float, irish nachos and a corn dog. I haven't had a corn dog in a long time. This one was good and hit the spot. The rootbeer float was a bit light on ice cream, but none the less was good. The fries were as advertised with cheese bacon and chives. No complaints here.. good occasionally but too much grease for me on a regular basis!

Been coming to Schoop's locations since i was a kid. Love the burgers
(4)Courtney H.
Everything we had here was delicious! Our server was very friendly and gave us good recommendations. We were starving from our drive from Houston, TX and decided to try this place out and I have to say that we are both glad that we did.

There are many different Schoop's locations located in NW Indiana and although the menu, quality and food are the same, each location has it's own distinct personality. This place is probably going to ranked as one of my favorite Schoop's because of it's personality. All of the locations gives the impression of a retro-diner but this place has done it the best that I have seen and it does an excellent job of returning you in time about 50 years. I love Schoop's burgers and this place does them justice. The Irish Nachos which consists of cheese, bacon bits, green onions, and ranch dressing dumped on top of a pile of fries are OUTSTANDING. The service here was good also. Since I am out in this area several times a year, I will be back for sure.

I tried this as an alternative to my beloved Culver's butter burger, in an effort to experience something more truly "Indiana." :) It's very sort of old-time casual 50s cafe style. Chocolate malt - amazing; I'm full. Order of cheese or chili fries or whatever it was for the table; overkill. Try to avoid this, because you will be too full for your enormous burger. I wasn't able to fully enjoy, but I took the second half home, and it still tasted outstanding.

Mediocre burgers & chicken sandwiches--great buns though.

My boyfriend and I love to find unique and/or mom and pop type restaurants when we are traveling to various cities. We get a feel for the real community this way. I was blown away by EVERYTHING at Schoops. The authentic 50/60's era music, the classic diner decor, the friendly staff, I could go on pointing out all the great things about the atmosphere in this classic gem of a restaurant! But, you are looking for a great place to eat and I can say 100% this is it! The food is always off the charts delicious, and comes in generous portions ( my boyfriend and I both ordered fries and discovered 1 order would have been more then enough for both of us). Schoops is a GREAT place to bring the whole family, have a fun date night no matter what era you are growing up in, and experience the bygone era of a classic teen hang out. If you look close enough you might even find yourself thinking you see Fonzie and Richie, or The Pink Ladies, and The T-birds taking up a corner booth. With authentic soda pop flavors, and an affordable menu, this is a must do in your Michigan City, Indiana travels.

It's not a large chain. But there really isn't anything special. The service was kind of off. The waitresses seemed preoccupied with other things. The portions were decent sized but nothing special.
(3)Ed R.
Had a great experience tonight. Our server was so friendly to us - she paid really close attention to my kids and was very patient letting them order for themselves. One of my sons ordered a cheeseburger and got Grilled Cheese by mistake- the server immediately got a cheeseburger going and left him with the grilled cheese and fries to munch on. When she returned she had made a smiley face with glasses with the ketchup and mustard on his burger, he was so thrilled and happy! Also the Irish Nachos rule :)
(4)Theresa K.
My favorite place for cheese dogs and onion rings. The only place around with Green River, not to mention tons of other soda and milkshake flavors. The burgers are always big and cooked well. Breakfast menu is a bit pricey and simple....
(4)Josh B.
Not a bad place. Burgers are made fresh and taste really good. I also ordered the onion rings and they were really good. Oh yeah, do yourselves a favor and order the Nutella milkshake. You won't be disappointed, unless you don't like Nutella, then, there's no helping you. Anyways, good food and good service. A little on the pricy side seeing that everything is a la cart.
(4)Gerald B.
My wife & I went there for dinner. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and she the classic hamburger. The burger was very good. It was crispy on the edges with a decent flavor. I had to add more salt than I would've liked to. The bacon was more crispy than I like. We also ordered deep fried mushrooms which were fantastic! The coating was just the way I feel it should've been and the mushrooms themselves were hot & juicy. My wife was very happy with her burger. Portion sizes were great. I left very satisfied. My wife had to take half of her burger to go.

Super disappointed, heard good things and reviews on yelp were good. Got in, got seated quickly for our party of 8. It was a Tuesday afternoon so in my opinion that part went as it should've. Initially the waitress was right there. She took our drink order, it was all water. Took a little longer than expected to get water but was within a reasonable time. She took our order and it also came out within a reasonable time frame. Here's where it all falls apart.... for the most part the burgers were just acceptable. Some of the patties were super dry and "crispy" to the extent that one of the kids in our party couldn't even eat his burger. Mine, personally had a couple parts that I could've done without but I ate it anyway. The fries though. ....they were as under cooked as they could be. They weren't cold but they were FAR from crispy. Limp, soggy and not good. If the waitress would have checked back even once after bringing our food we could've addressed some of these issues. The shakes that were ordered weren't brought out until after the bill when we were ready to leave. After leaving 4 small fries and 2 large fries on the table due to them being inedible, the manager wouldn't take them off and only gave us 10% off. That didn't even cover the fries that weren't eaten. All in all this place is just over an hour from my house and I will not make a special trip to come out here nor will I recommend it to friends or family. Only giving 2 stars because the Irish nachos were good. Plenty of bacon and plenty of cheese sauce and the fries that came with it were cooked well.
(2)Heather M.
One of my favs. Seriously best burger I've ever had. It's the perfect portion of all ingredients piled on. It's the true All American burger. And the Texas Fries are HEAVEN! Customer service always 5 star. Love it here we are regulars now.
(5)Robert O.
They have some of the best hamburgers around and a very nice atmosphere take you back to the 70's with look and feel. Unlike some places you get more then you pay for with everything hand made to order and the way you would like it can change just about anything to get it the way you like it.
(5)Ed S.
Great fresh burger with crispy bacon, the Patti melt was equally fresh and just as yummy. Service was courteous and fast even at lunch time on a Saturday
(5)Cheryl L.
Love Schoop's hamburgers and fries. Recently tried one of the newer chains where I was told I would have the best burger ever. No, it was not. Not even close to the deliciousness that is Schoop's. Been eating at Schoop's since my parents took me to the Hammond or Munster locations when I was a kid and they are just as great now as they were then. Cherry and Green River shakes are out of this world. We never fail to stop at this location when on our way home from Chicago.
(5)Gabriel L.
Amazing service! Great food, great price, and again I say astonishing service! Best Schoop's ever!
(5)Jim T.
We were passing through and our stomachs were talking very loudly about how their need have been ignored for way too long. Using the app on the phone I started to review the area for a place to eat. I found way too many places blow 3 stars and though we would have to settle for some big box chain. This is something I do not like to do when I am on the road as I like to find local homegrown goodies. Low and behold this place appeared as I widened my search and we made a beeline straight to the place. When we arrived I could tell we found a great place. it was not too flashy yet not run down. Being mid afternoon the parking lot was scarce so we knew it would not be too crowded. One in the place we were seated at a table and the waitress was most gracious to us after I told her it was our first visit as we were just passing through. Rachel walked us through the menu and told us the potions were LARGE. I ordered a chocolate malted with a side of water, Mmmmm good is all I can say. The burgers which are fresh and never frozen, curly fries and onion rings were great, the portions are large so we had to get to-go boxes for the leftovers. The staff is helpful and friendly. Things like that along with the good quality of the food will make me come back the next time I am passing through.
(5)Phyllis D.
Really yummy burgers, fries, onions rings and friendly service. The milkshakes looked delicious, but there was no room left in my esophagus.
(4)Tom V.
Maria had a Swiss burger and since I needed to make sure I got my daily minimum required amount of cholesterol ordered a double Swiss burger. We shared a basket of curly fries. Burger was excellent. The only complaints we had was that the fries were not as hot as they should of been and the wifi was not working right. Waitress was friendly and service was fast.
(4)Moose P.
If you are on I-94 and looking for Starbucks, you'll find Schoop's Fresh Handmade Burgers next door. The sign says "stop in. Taste why voted best burger." I'm no idiot. I knew what to order. A single cheeseburger with all the trimmings. This is NOT the kind of burger place where they ask you, "How would you like it?". Within those parameters, this is a fine place. If you order bacon on your burger you'll get a nice rash of the pork stuff. The 50's off-the-shelf memorabilia and music was Disneyesque, but the steady stream of office workers in for a Wednesday lunch was real enough, as were the prompt, friendly waitresses.
(4)Deborah H.
Just had lunch here on the way back from vacation in Michigan. What a treat! Tasty burgers and awesome shakes. And the Irish nachos are a must, as others have mentioned. Very friendly service!
(5)Luis B.
I love these burgers. Nice, 50's feel to this restaurant. If you're on a diet, don't come here.
(4)Miss P.
Sooo impressed. Very friendly staff. Old school diner style. Burgers are huge and hand made. I had the mushroom swiss, they really pack it up. Fries were good too. Will definitely go back for more comfort :D

Outside of sit down, dine in only restaurants -- there are four types of burger places that every burger lover is aware of: 1) Cheap and Fast: example being McDonald's. 2) Not as Cheap, Greasy and Sort of Fast: examples being Steak n Shake, Culver's 3) Char Broiled Chicago Burgers: examples being Nana's, Portillo's 4) "Gourmet" Burgers aka For Burger Snobs: examples being Tom & Eddies, Smashburger Schoop's burgers are a combination of #2 and #4. We were going to the Blue Chip for a wedding reception and I stopped at Culver's and then cursed loudly when I proceeded further down the road and saw a Schoop's. There used to be one of these close to our home and I adored the food there! So, we planned on going Sunday on the way home. When we got there, it was still breakfast time. During breakfast time you are still able to get the burgers, just nothing fried. So, to add to my list -- I got the Bacon Cheeseburger with a side of hash browns. Oh, RED CREME SODA here. An immediate win. Anywho, the burger came out and as I remembered a total delicious grease bomb. Cheese is lacking, there should be more to equal the size of the burger -- but the burger still makes up for it. Just imagine the biggest Steak N Shake/Culvers burger with perfect crispy edges. Flavor is great. Plenty of bacon. SO GOOD. Service was not great. But being that it was Sunday morning, the servers all looked to be 19 or in that vicinity, I give a pass. Will re-review if we ever get back that way. Also, it was pretty grungy in there. But the food -- just so wonderful. Oh I love you Schoop's.
(4)Dan N.
I know I've reviewed other Schoop's locations before, but this Schoop's did such a good job that I had to give it some love. In fact, my fiance, who's typically not a fan of burgers, proudly proclaimed the cheeseburger from here the BEST burger that she's ever eaten. If your having it my way, get your self a Mickey with everything (traditional everything, no LTM, etc). Even with the explosion of trendy burger joints over the past several years, Schoop's remains at the top of my list, especially if you are looking for a classic, diner-style burger!
(5)Don H.
When my wife and I drive around we prefer to eat at a place that's not a chain. I have only recently started exploring Michigan City on my semi-frequent drives to Detroit and was excited to check out a new place. We found Schoop's merely by getting off the expressway and looking for lights -- it was nearly 9p so we knew we had to move quick. Even going in close to closing time, they were gracious about us stopping in. We made quick about ordering and I got the monterey chicken burger which I thought was divine (and semi-healthy). The potatoes were also very good. It was washed down with a very cold root beer, perfect companion to a burger. When we were in here, the atmosphere was quiet and you can tell they were just closing up. But they never made us to feel uncomfortable or rushed. Definitely want to check this place out again, especially in the summer time.

I would almost like to give one star for how rude the female owner/manager (not sure which) is but I need to give 2 because the burgers are good. My family use to eat here once a week and our bill averaged around $45-55 every time for a family of 2 adults and 2 children, at a burger joint. We would over look that because they have the best hamburgers in town and the wait staff is very friendly. If we did not eat in we would carry out and one week we ordered mozzarella sticks but when we got home our mozzarella was a cheese pancake and they forgot another item. I immediately called Schoops to let them know what had happened, it looked like they over cooked the sticks and the cheese had came out of them and were all stuck together and the missing item. I asked for my money back because I live 12 miles away and would not be coming back up there that night. The girl I spoke to said there was nothing she could do about it because it was a Saturday evening and she would leave a note for the owner to call me back on Monday. On Monday I did not receive a call back and so the next time I picked up an order I spoke to a female manager or owner and told her what happened. Everything that she spouted out was rude and with an attitude, she said I waited too long to tell her and I should have got the name of the girl I spoke to and there was nothing she was going to do about it now because she cant help every person who comes in and claims they had a problem with their order. So even though I called back the same day within 30 minutes of getting my order its my fault because this woman is not sure how to pick up a phone and call an unhappy customer back who had a problem with an order. Oh and no matter what I said to this woman she wanted to argue with me and tell me I was wrong. Shes a very unhappy person. If it wasn't for this experience my family would still eat there once a week and this would have been a four star review. Do not order their "new" pork tenderloin sandwich, it's disgusting. The old one was perfect and really delicious. Schoops, why can't you offer fries with a $10 cheeseburger?? I'm changing my stars from 2 to 4 because the owner spoke to me about problems I had with the manager. The owner was very apologetic about everything that had happened and sent me a gift card. If only they would change back to the old pork tenderloins I would give them 5. Btw the manager got fired. Ha ha karmas a itch.
(4)Thierry L.
There is nothing quite like a Schoop's burger or a Schoop's breakfast! There is a reason they are voted BEST BURGER and you can taste it with every bite! They use fresh, never frozen, meat and hand ball/press their patties. The old school diner feel is awesome! The portions are HUGE! Skip the fast food chains and head here for a meal you will NOT regret. Period.
(5)Elvin C.
Busy but always able to find a booth. First visit back since a while. Get a burger (crispy edges!) (then fries, Loops, or rings as sides if you want, but they aren't the star of the show here). What I did find this time around was a chocolate coke with free refills (and they are nice enough to oblige with a refill to go - especially with much more driving ahead). Not sure I'd say $$ though. $6 burger, $2 drink, tax and tip can still keep you under $10. I wouldn't put it in the same category as other $$ restaurants I see listed which are at the $30 end of the scale.
(5)Rosa J.
The food is what you would expect from a local diner. The prices are slightly lower than the well-known national chain restaurant (a.k.a Danny's), but the selections are much fewer to choose from. There's nothing surprising about this joint. I ordered the mushroom Swiss burger. The bun was too soft to hold up the mushrooms inside. My husband ordered the Irish Nachos and Mazzarella sticks. Everything was decent and the service was just adequate.
(3)Toni F.
Haven't been to Schoop's in decades - what a shame. Great service, good chili, good burgers and hot, fresh fries. What more can you ask for?
(4)Jim C.
You have to have a Schoop' s buger if you are ever in Michigan City. A have to have for me when I go back. The best burger in town. Wish we had them in CA. Bummer !
(5)Nick B.
The patty melt was better then the burger. The service was great and it had plenty of parking. If your driving through Michigan City on the 94, skip the national chain fast food joints drive a little further down Franklin and check this place out.
(3)LaVelle J.
Everything was great from the freshly cooked burgers and the yummy strawberry shake. The shake reminded me of Friendlys on the East coast and that is the best you are going to get! The burgers had just the right amount of crisp on the edges. I will be back!
(5)Maria G.
So. We made a special trip down to Michigan City from Chicago for some Schoops burgers. I've been enjoying them for years and was looking forward to this. I ordered the Mickey and it had an old oil flavor to it. Definitely turned me off. It was more of an after taste but it was there :/. I also remember the burger having relish and not the 20 pickles that were on it. The other people in my group enjoyed their meals which is why I decided on 3 stars and not less. Could use a little sprucing up in the place too.
(3)Edward W.
Great place for a quick burger and shake. Service fine at this location. Decor can use some updating.
(4)Tobin B.
Love this place for breakfast and lunch. Decor is nice for a diner but the staff is great! For Breakfast Steph and Lissa are the best!
(4)Steven M.
I don't remember them being this big. But a double swiss cheese burger with tomato, pickles, onions, lettuce, mayo and ketchup was pretty hefty to pick-up and eat. But it was worth every dripping bite. The fries were pretty good as well. But the oinion rings were over the top. Huge and crispy. No frozen numbers here. The service needs a kick in the pants though.
(5)Brandon S.
Breakfast was good. Came back for burgers. Not impressed
(3)Roberto M.
If you want to eat in a place that takes you back into time. This is the right place from the decor to the staff it is old school. Luckily for me I stopped here to try one of their delicious patty melt. Their fries are descent size and their soft drinks come in good portions. The staff is between their teens and early 20's which is plus if your around that age.
(4)Kate M.
I have been going to Schoop's since the early 1990's and have always enjoyed the food. The food is very American and classic diner style service. The atmosphere is very charming as they have updated their decor in the last few years to update a fresher version of the retro diner look. I will say that the service is mediocre and the tables are usually dirty...even after they have been cleaned. They recently became a non-smoking establishment so that is nice! Overall, I enjoy going there but am always disappointed by the lack of cleanliness. If you go, be sure to have the Irish Nachos!
(4)Matthew J.
Good, classic American food, cheeseburger, fries and Coke. Fast service, clean and good prices.
(4)Kristen S.
I love the burgers at Schoop's! Fresh, never frozen patties really make the burger. Throw in some cheese fries and a chocolate shake and it's like you're a kid again!
